Discover Comfort & Ease Like Never Before

There are many different conditions that can cause chronic pain during your lifetime. And while some can be managed with the help of over-the-counter medications, many others require the help of a professional to be treated correctly.

Chronic pain is considered to be any pain lasting longer than 12 weeks that affects your daily activities and quality of life.

At Peace Diagnostic Imaging we use some of the latest pain management techniques and with the help of image-guided fluoroscopy or ultrasound, we treat persistent pain symptoms through the injection of medications (steroid and anesthetic) into the affected areas. We treat many areas of the body such as lower back, hips, knees, shoulders, wrists and more. If you are struggling with pain, ask your doctor if this form of treatment is right for you.

What is Pain Management?

Pain management therapies can help reduce the amount of pain medication you have to take and maintain a level of comfort to help you function with your day-to-day activities. Many people report relief from the pain they were experiencing and have an improved quality of life for several months after an injection.

Peace Diagnostic Imaging is proud to offer a variety of pain management options, including:

Lumbar Injections

We see many patients struggling with lower back or lumbar pain and numbness, and can treat your symptoms with the following pain management options:

  • Epidural Steroid Injections – Epidural steroid injections help manage pain and numbness in your lower back, legs, and buttocks. The injections are inserted into the epidural space under the guidance of our fluoroscopy technology.
  • Selective Nerve Root Block – SNRB injections target specific compressed nerves caused by herniated discs, degenerative changes and conditions such as scoliosis. The medication injected reduces inflammation and numbs the pain transmitted by the nerve.
  • Facet Joint Injections – Facet joints are instrumental for providing comfortable back movement as they connect the vertebrae together. Facet joint injections target these particular joints to minimize pain and inflammation caused by Facet Joint Syndrome.

Joint and bursa injections treat areas, such as hips, knees, shoulders, wrists, etc in which you experience chronic pain caused from arthritis and other inflammatory conditions.

What Can You Expect?

The types of services we offer will have different processes to follow and you will be given instructions at the time of booking. However, below are some common things to keep in mind before, during, and after your appointment.

Before Your Appointment

  • Please arrive 30min prior to your exam
  • Wear loose clothing. (No metal buttons, zippers or snaps). You may be asked to change into a gown.
  • In some cases, you may be required to lay on your stomach for a period of time. Please let our doctors know if you have problems holding this position.
  • Please have someone accompany you to your appointment as you will not be able to drive immediately following your appointment. For some procedures, if you are unable to bring a driver, you must wait 15 minutes and be monitored at PDI before you drive.
  • You may have to stop taking certain medications prior to your appointment. Please consult with your doctor or the Technologist to find out if you will need to discontinue any medications before your exam and for how long.
  • It is important to inform us if you are diabetic, on any antibiotics for an active infection or if there is a chance of pregnancy.
  • The technologist will explain the procedure and ask you to sign a consent form, allowing us to proceed with your injection.
  • Once you are in position, the radiologist will clean the skin and then may administer freezing.
  • The radiologist will then insert a needle into the joint space and inject a small amount of x-ray dye, using image-guided fluoroscopy or ultrasound to ensure the needle is positioned correctly.
  • Once in position, the radiologist will then inject a combination of long-lasting anesthetic and steroid into the joint space to reduce pain and inflammation.
  • Procedures typically take 10-15 minutes to complete
  • Following your injection, please avoid taking baths and using hot tubs or swimming pools for a few days but you may shower. You should also avoid strenuous exercise for a few days as well.
  • You can expect the medications to take effect within 7 days and last up to approximately 3-6 months.
  • We ask that you keep track of your pain and all of your injections in your Pain Diary, which will be provided by PDI.
  • Consult with your doctor to discuss the next steps in your pain management plan, which may include repeat injections.
  • These procedures must be ordered by a doctor and are covered by your provincial health care plan.
