Women’s Ultrasound Services

Women may go through many changes with their health. From pregnancy to menopause, these events can have an impact on your internal organs, joints, reproductive system, and even your bones.

We offer an incredible range of women’s-focused services, and these include ultrasound. Some of our ultrasound services for women include:

Obstetric Ultrasound

Most people equate ultrasound with the examination of fetuses, or Obstetric ultrasound. Most physicians have adopted the College of Physician and Surgeons recommendation to scan fetuses at least once in every trimester.

During these scans the sonographer will evaluate and image your baby and provide a technical impression and images for the radiologist to interpret. Your referring practitioner will then be provided a report to discuss with you at your next prenatal appointment.

PDI is happy to announce that, as per Alberta Health Services guidelines, we can now welcome one significant other to witness a portion (last 5 minutes) of the Obstetric Ultrasound exam. Our front desk staff will ask them to COVID screen, mask, and sanitize, prior to being let into the room with the patient.

Gynecologic ultrasound, also known as pelvic ultrasound, takes images of your uterus, ovaries, and other internal structures and organs. These ultrasound tests can help diagnose pelvic pain, menstrual problems, urinary problems, and more.

Automated breast ultrasound (ABUS) are generally used to help diagnose the existence of breast cancer in patients who have dense breast tissue. With dense breast tissue, mammograms have a tougher time detecting cancer because the dense tissue can hide the abnormality.

For more information about what to expect from an ABUS exam, please visit our ABUS page.

What to Expect Before & During an Ultrasound

You may need to prepare differently depending on the type of ultrasound you may be having. Please speak to your referring practitioner and our team at Peace Diagnostic Imaging to get a full idea of what to expect from your ultrasound.

More information can be found on the following pages:

Before The Appointment

The steps you may take to prepare for your ultrasound may differ depending on what needs examining. You will get clear instructions on how to prepare for the exam when you book your appointment. Some common preparations include:

  • Fasting for 8 to 12 hours before the exam.
  • Drinking plenty of water and holding your bladder if your bladder needs examining.
  • Telling your doctor about any medications, supplements, or drugs you may be taking regularly.

Ultrasound exams use no radiation and are perfectly safe for examining fetuses in any trimester.

At the start of your exam, the sonographer will begin by applying a water-soluble gel to the area that will be scanned. This gel helps the ultrasound provide a clear image, maximizing our ability to detect any possible abnormalities.

Your radiologist will guide you through the appointment, and your referring practitioner will generally receive our report within 1 business day, or same day if urgent.
